As the healthcare industry has accelerated the adoption of EMRs and HIS, the concept of a paperless system is no longer inconceivable. And as the industry evolves, the focus is now shifting towards the impact on the workflow as more and more information becomes available. The need to filter the information contextually to the provider/patient relationship was created, and the workflows have started to adapt.

Today, we’d like to highlight the latest version of Cerner Millennium®, called Millennium+.

Cerner Millennium’s previous solutions have promoted personal and community health management by connecting consumers, clinicians and healthcare organizations into a streamlined, unified single care process. Cerner Millennium runs on a variety of networks, processors and operating systems, in a three-layer application model: Oracle® database running on HP-UX as the bottom layer, with Cerner Application Server on HP-UX as the middle layer; the top layer is the user interface which runs on Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional and any Internet browser.

Now Millennium+™ combines the enterprise platform with the secure Cerner Cloud, which means that users can obtain and input personalized, intuitive and relevant clinical workflows via a computer, tablet or smartphone. In other words, it truly puts information at the user’s fingertips, wherever they are.

Because health system and community interoperability are so crucial, Millennium+ integrates and unifies information gathered within the organization and across the community into a provider’s workflow. And it was designed to speed up workflows, reduce clicks and ensure Cerner solutions provide each user the information they need at the right point in the workflow.

In addition to a sepsis alert tool and a chart search feature, the Millennium+ platform will offer PowerChart+Touch™, a solution created specifically for the iPad. With a swipe of a finger, providers can quickly and easily navigate workflows.

According to Cerner, Millennium+ creates a new user experience that is:

  • Fast—It’s designed for optimal performance. The solution speeds up access to comprehensive clinical workflows, anticipating the data requirements to complete end-to-end experiences while reducing clicks and improving context of care.
  • Smart—Millennium+ uses “smart” programming and is aware of the context of the patient, the location and the user. It anticipates “next,” and brings up information in the context of the next decision or action.
  • Easy—Built to be easy for the end user, the interaction is intuitive, with minimal training and configuration required.

Millennium+ solutions are currently rolling out to physicians through the end of the year and to additional providers through 2013.
